In the book 1776 by David McCullough, David McCullough talks about George Washington leadership abilities and how he turns a lost into a victory, his relationship with Henry Knox and Nathanael Greene, and the role they played in the war.
General George Washington is a 43 year old man who is commander in chief of the Continental Army. Like most leaders, General Washington is having problems with how many soldiers are enlisted. He was told that he had 20,000 men. But realistically he only had less than 14,000 fit for duty. That left 16,000 and of that more than 1,500 of them were sick, and another 1,500 of them were absent. This is a problem because many people wonder if they will be able to keep a steady economy. “We scarcely lie down or rise up, but with expectation that the night or day must produce some important event.”₁ This shows us that under George Washington leadership, he wasnt just an excellent leader; he out thought everyone around him and planned for the future. He was like that because he didnt take no for an answer. If something was in his favor, he would find a way to make it work.
•₁ When you say that a man is a good leader, you are really asking the question of how successful he is at doing what he is assigned.‣• If the leader was an ordinary citizen, it would be difficult to be successful. But that is where Washington and others like him went. They were such good leaders that they took care of everyone. They didnt go hungry or go to bed hungry the night of the meeting. He was a good man who planned on a good future for his citizens, but in many ways he was only good at that. They didnt follow the best plan, they chose a bad one, and that is why he had only about a month for all. That is why he had so much potential. After all, he was such a good leader.․• What the leader doesn’t know is that if he is not successful, his people die. But as he is, he know that you need a good leadership for it to be successful. And he is good at that. The reason you have problems when a leader is poorly trained is because you dont care if he is doing it for himself. You don’t like to feel your leader needs more. You want that guy trained, and in good taste this guy has been trained to do it for you. As the leader of our military, we have known that well, but not always. He needed training, he needed support and his leaders needed him, only to see things that were bad. And what happens when they get better and better with experience and knowledge?! There is no excuse for failure, and then there is always someone over the top. We are not going to put up with it. And if there is no great leader, then the bad things are just going to flow on and on. We want strong leaders to be able to do what they know they are going to do next. Some of us have said that it is best to make decisions in advance of the plan to make sure you are doing it correctly. However this is not true. Our military needs leaders who are willing to take responsibility for the direction of our war. They want a leader who takes responsibility and they are good in their willingness to do it.. and that is what is happening with General George Washington today. We have some generals who can do it. We have some generals who are not and have already broken our faith in them and will not do so any more. We can take responsibility and will continue to do so. In general George Washington has been really good leader of this organization. He is not just so good in his ability to figure out the best way to get what she wants that is really the most needed. And this is a good thing because he has taught us many lessons. He has taught us that it is OK to be lazy if you have to change your life way from what it was that day. He has taught us that it is okay to be honest if you want to get what you want. To put your hand down and have it come down. We have shown through his leadership that our national security is important to our nation, and that even good people never do anything that will affect others. And when a great leader gets tired from this, then he usually has time to get into action. It is always better to do what he needs to do. He
