Geography of the Cold War – What Was Containment?
On no the Russians are coming. We must stop them!!
After World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union glared at each other. What was containment? Containment is the idea that the Soviet Union and Soviet Communism should not be allowed to spread. These three events clearly demonstrate the US’s policy of Containment, the Berlin Airlift/ Blockade, Korean War, and The Cuban Missile Crisis.
One example of Containment was the Berlin Airlift. From June 1948 to May 1949 Stalin chose  to stop all shipments in and out of West Berlin. (Doc B, map) This was very bad because the Berlin Airlift supplied West Berlin with food and fuel so citizens could survive the Soviet force Berlin Blockade. US, England and France decided to support West Berliners by air, flying in supplies for more than 2,000,000 people for almost a year. This was a very important turning point because three years earlier Americans were fighting Hitler and the Germans.(Doc B) This was a good example of Containment because it kept West Berlin free and kept communism and Soviet power from spreading.
Another example of Containment was the Korean War. Korea was separated into two fractions, a communist North benefited  by the Soviet Union, and a non-communist South benefited from the United States. In November of 1950, communist
