This is based on the book Strengths Finder 2.0 of which, upon completion of the online strengths assessment, I received the top five strengths: context, harmony, communication, adaptability, and restorative. Based on the book, strengths are defined as the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance. This is achieved by having a natural way of doing or feeling something, talent, combined with learning and studying or practicing achieved or new skills, investment. These principles are the basics when it comes to determining a persons strengths.

With respect to its focus on an individual, the study of individuals’ strengths and abilities may be considered an ongoing endeavour. It may also be regarded as evidence-based or as the result of studies. However, I find such things as these to be an unbalanced and overly prescriptive approach, taking into consideration both the nature of the individual’s strengths and these strengths in conjunction with their comparative position compared with the other individuals. These findings, which are based on the information I have gathered under the “Excellence Criteria,” are based on my own personal study and research on the individual’s strengths and their potential in a variety of different domains. I do not want to get into some one-size-fits-all terms: it is far too simple to define their strengths and their potential to be relevant to a particular situation. The term “excellence” may also be better understood in a more nuanced way; I simply do not want to be the one who comes up with a list or definition of an individual’s potential and then re-iterate it. So I can certainly identify a particular list or definition of an individual’s strengths and ability, but I will continue to consider this as a process that is ongoing regardless of the results. As most psychologists, I have always assumed one term is better defined than another. That’s just part of it.

I think we’re in a unique situation. We’ve become increasingly resistant to saying which of three things is correct, for example, “Well… I’m an Olympic athlete.” Or “Well… maybe I should think harder about why I do things this way because this will get me in trouble. It will make me look like a failure.” Or “Well… when will I stop being so good and who will get angry at me for it?”

As always, you are free to leave suggestions and corrections, but I will make this my main point to guide the reader through the book: It will take a lot of creativity, dedication and thought. If you try to read about any of these things and think you have already done any, it will likely be just for fun on the outside, and the results cannot be known for certain. I have also made changes in some areas that allow for more research and clarification and so on. The best advice I have received during my time with Gallup is the idea of making

“You cannot be anything you want to be – but you can be a lot more of who you already are.” This is the authors modified quote of the saying “you can be anything you want to be, if you just try hard enough”, of which the author calls a misguided maxim. I found this quote to be one of my favorite parts that I have learned and been able to apply from this book because I feel that I can relate to it more so than the original saying. I have figured this out throughout my college career with many of the classes I have taken and some of the activities I have partaken in throughout the years. For example, I have realized that I will never be great at accounting, no matter how much I study for it and work with accounting majors. But I can be better at accounting than I already am by continuing to study hard and working with accounting oriented friends. I have come to realize that some people just have a natural talent with certain things while others do not. I invest a good amount of my time for accounting, my toughest course this semester, but I just do not have the talent to become an expert in this field.

I feel that my number one strength, context, is a good representation of me. Context is heavily based on history and how what happened in the past has an effect on what is happening now and will happen in the future. History is bound to repeat itself at some point, so we must learn from the past if we are to do better in the present and future. I am always thinking about past decisions I have made both in and out of an academic setting, and I try to let my past make me a better person in the present by learning from past mistakes or building on successes that I have accomplished. Also, the decisions I make now will affect my future so I must make sure that I do my best in the present so that I can have a positive history.

I can relate with my second strength, harmony, in many ways. I do not like to start or be involved in conflict if I can avoid it. I feel that I am a very agreeable person and that conflict tends to have a way of steering clear of me. But when I am involved in conflict, I try not to draw it out, and I work to end the conflict as peacefully as possible.
