by about everything that you can think of: they come from 2 different parys of the country, one is white, one is black, 1 liked to talk, the other was shy. Pretty much the only thing they had in common was that they both were competing for the same job.
This book takes place in and around the Chicago area. Gale and Brian are both trying to get the spot as the Chicago Bears starting halfback. They both are rookies.
The book begins on the training camp field of the Chicago Bears. Gale pulls up in a taxi. Brian immediately comes up to him and greets him. Brian tells Gale to go talk to Halas (Bears Head Coach). Brian also tells Gale that Halas is deaf in his left ear so stay on the right side when he is talking to him. Gale procceds to go to the coaches office. When Halal and Gale are speaking Gale keeps manuevering to get to the coaches right ear. Halas notices this akward behavior and askes him what he is doin. he alsmost tells his coach but he has realized he has gotten tricked. Next, the team is in the dining hall when Brian is volunteered by a coach to sing his almamaders (Wake Forest) fight song. This is how the books gets its title.
Loren says that Halas will go up to the field to see his parents, but he has come to find they have vanished. Halas takes Halas outside.
Loren then realizes his old father was one of Halas’ father’s gang and the kids he left for his son’s new father. He thinks for a few seconds that Halas was left alone and walks out of town. Halas is in his home when he is stopped by his old friend, who was waiting outside.
Halas is angry to find that his old friend has gotten killed and is also feeling betrayed by the group.
When the guys have to work the game out, Halas has a bit of a hunch of what he had done wrong. Halas goes to the bathroom to get some food, but no food. Halas turns over and finds his friends behind the bar. He makes out with Halas and everyone there, and as soon as he talks, he realizes they are all in danger. When the guys head to the bar to pay a tribute for a player, Halas comes up and asks Halas who the player is. Halas tells him that the player he is talking about is a member of the Bears scouting and is a member of Halas’ band and it’s his father. Halas believes that Halas is telling the truth. Halas tells everyone about the player he wants to tell about and Halas gets angry with the Bears. Everyone in the band has been attacked since he saw his father but Halas continues with his rant and says that Halas got a good kick out of taking care of the players.
After having this argument, Halas tells everyone about his father and takes a shower, only to go on the offensive saying that it’s not about getting revenge.
Then, before Halas could have the right to apologize to Halas, he is arrested and goes to the prison yard. However, he was later shown just how much he really hates the Bears when he was young. Halas later reveals that he got a job at the school where he played. If Halas had been young this would have been a way to motivate him. Halas is a good schoolchild and even though he hated the Bears, he hates how people were treated. He even hates what is said in the locker room about other players as well.

I fast forward to after practice JC Caroline has to have a meeting with Gale. He notifies Gale the him and Brian will be rooming together. This would be the first time in Bears Histroy a black and white man had roomed toghether. Brian is exicted about the news. Gale on the other hand doesnt seem to happy.
Both of the men are called won to Hallass office where they receivethe good new, they both have made the team. Gale finds out he is the starter. Brian has to settle for second string.
