“Crash” the movie is a great tool to help people realize the hardships that immigrants face as they come, and try to assimilate to the U.S. culture. The first part of the assimilation cycle is an immigrant coming to the United States. In the movie this is depicted by the Chinese immigrants in the back of the van driven by Ludacris. They probably didnt know what was going on because none of them probably knew any English at all. When Ludacris dropped them off in China town he is trying to complete the assimilation cycle, by not giving into the urge of making the money that he could of made off of the illegal immigrants from the chop-shop owner.

The next step of the assimilation cycle is to live by people who share a similar language and culture. The Parisian family, who were mistake as Arabs, had a convenience store to cater to the Middle Eastern culture. This is a form of living in a parallel culture. These parents were probably first generation immigrants and didnt understand the US culture, but their daughter who is second generation understood the culture.

The next step is the labor jobs which are done by immigrants and poor communication skills. This is when the first generation Parisian immigrant and the father of the second generation immigrant daughter are in the gun store trying to buy a gun and the salesman gets upset and starts yelling at the Persian man for not speaking very good English, and as a result the storeowner kicks him out of the store. There is also a Spanish speaking working as a maid for the district attorney and his family. The Spanish woman has not made it past this part of the assimilation cycle and most likely wont. The locksmith is also of Spanish decent and doesnt get respect from the D.A.s wife just like the made, because of generalizations made by the white culture in his case; that a tattoo represents that he is in a Mexican gang or that the tattoos are prison related. He has good communication skills but is still working a labor job.

These people are constantly exposed to new experiences, ideas and beliefs. The generations are more likely to follow as they continually are more a part of the US culture and see it more first hand. Elizabeth goes to a Catholic school with other children which for the most part are probably not like her so she will learn their ways and be more likely to follow the US culture leaving her parents beliefs behind, because she will find out by her classmates that that is what is socially acceptable to that group.
