From the beginning of time, men and women have always possessed individual characteristics. These characteristics can be accredited to the survival of both sexes, and thus our species. Not all of these identifying traits tend to be the same with men and women. There are many similarities and differences between the two genders, not all of which are readily evident. The variations of each sex have come to play an important role in how each uniquely functions in todays society.

At first glance men and women look quite similar. Both have the same extremities; two arms, two legs, connected with a torso and a head projecting on top. Men and women both evolved to walk upright on two legs and given an opposable thumb, characteristics exclusive to our species alone. With a closer look, there are very distinct physical differences. Differences that evolved from the different roles men and women played thousands of years ago. Men were the provider, much like they are in some instances today. They are built for hard labor with broad shoulders and immense upper body strength. Men have narrow hips and thick skin that does not bruise or tear easily. Men also have a very high tolerance for pain in their extremities. Women, on the other hand, are made primarily for childbearing. They do not have the thick skin or extremely strong bones. Most of a womans strength can be found in her lower body. The hips of a woman are much wider and tilt forward in order to support a pregnancy and birth. In addition, women have breasts that serve to provide nutrition for newborn babies. As a result, women have more curves that create a much softer in appearance than men, whose possess mainly strong, harsh features.

The physiological comparison between men and women is just as articulate. Both sexes have the same nervous system; the brain and spinal cord. It is a subtle variation in the brain that creates a difference between the way men and women problem solve. Scientists have found that women have up to four times as many neurons, or brain cells, connecting the left and right brain. This small structural difference results in the different strategies that men and women use in problem solving. Although it is clearly evident that both sexes solve problems equally sufficient, men have a tendency to rely on the left half of their brain (because the lack of connector neurons will not permit adequate use of both sides). As a result they reason with a linear or sequential perspective, taking one step at a time. Males have an enhanced ability to separate themselves from problems and minimize the complexity The lack of right brain use results in a tendency to under appreciate subtle detail of a problem. Women on the other hand are more global thinkers; taking a broad perspective when approaching a problem. They tend to consider multiple sources of information and even multiple problems at one time; as a result
