In the novel “The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald the first two chapters are focused on the setting and the characters. The author describes the setting to show the kind of word he lives in and the kind of people living in it. He shows hoe sophisticated and how rich the different characters are while describing himself and comparing his life with theirs.
The first chapter of the novel describes the characters. He describes Tom Buchanan as a statue. He describes him as to big for his own shoes and say that he has a presence around him. He also says that tom is arrogant. He describes his cousin and toms wife Daisy as sophisticated women who hide her true feelings about her husband be unfaithful. She often speaks low so who ever talking to her has to lean towards her to listen who makes her feel important. He describes Jordan Bakers as the One of the new women of his time. She is independent and she plays professional golf which at the time only men played. Also in the first chapter the author describes the setting which is extremely important. This first chapter introduces two of the most important area the East Egg and West Egg. Though each is home is accosicated with being rich and is only separated by water there values are different.
In chapter two we are introduced to Toms mistress Myrtle. While Tom and nick are on the train Tom forces Nick to follow him to meet her. Myrtle lives in the valley of Ashes. The valley of ashes is nothing like where Tom and Nick live. The valley shows absolute poverty. After they meet they go back to toms apartment were they have drinks. Myrtle starts to get louder and more obnoxious the more she drinks, and shortly after Tom gives her a new puppy as a gift, she begins to talk about Daisy. Tom firmly warns her never to mention his wife. Myrtle angrily says
