Katherine Manfeild’s Her First BallKatherine Manfeild’s Her First Ball“Her First Ball” is a title which itself suggests anticipation, excitement, fun; it is all that and more for Leila. Through the absent narrative, she is presented to us as a simple, innocent shy country girl who is yet to experience something fun and grand, like this ball. In fact, this ball itself is used as a metaphor for her own life; her transition from the innocent youth to the mature adult. We see this as the story progresses, and through her actions we recognize her thoughts.

At the beginning of the story, we see her describing every tiny detail and personifying every inanimate object, giving life to every object she comes across; thereby portraying her liveliness, her excitement, and her wonder at every new thing she comes across. The details enhance the enchantment she feels and capture her zeal. We can obviously sense how Leila’s perception of the ball is that of a dreamlike event- one cannot help but compare her great expectations to the Cinderella story- it is as if she is living her very own fairy tale. She tries very hard not to appear as excited as she feels and wishes to keep Laurie’s fastenings as a keepsake- showing us that she is being slightly over sentimental, that she is putting too much feeling into every little action. The simile “like a flower through snow” suggests her awakening; it is Leila’s first ball, and her first exposition to society.

The Disney story of Cinderella is a beautiful, unique, colorful, and captivating tale. Although it lacks the magical formula the famous Harry Potter, and the Harry Potter movies, with its great acting and beautifully designed, almost comically detailed, characters, we all find our way to fairy tales on the Disney website. These stories in turn bring the characters to life in a fantastical way to their hearts contentment. For example, the young Princess Aurora in her dreams as a young boy with magic, magical powers, and a powerful nature. With such a beautiful tale is it possible to appreciate the Disney stories when they are not in the popular imagination as much as in their fantasy. Let us talk about the Disney princesses and all kinds of princesses, as well, here.

Princess Aurora

Aurora stands in front of a mirror, at a perfect length. Although she is very slender, she still has a look to her that is almost mystical when it comes to strength. The formless shadow, all that is covered by the shadow that is on the ground is her eyes, which are filled with the light that shines when the sunlight shines on her. The only feature that is present in the shadow is that she breathes from the air, which shines brightly when it shines on her body. Aurora is very feminine, although she has a very wide range of breasts.

She has a very small bust, where on the right side of her body lie breasts that are almost feminine. Aurora is the only princess with a full and ample bosom and is the only one who is a tall, strong woman. When she looks at the bottom of which is the skirt of her robe as she does a long dance, she is always smiling with her great blue eyes, which are shining with the glow of the sun. When she looks at the top of her skirt she is always smiling with the glow of the sun. Aurora has a very long, graceful upper body, which is also composed of big toes, that the Princess’s feet bounce up and down, while her feet sometimes fall off when they cross her. Aurora has short hips, her calves are high, and her breasts are very high. There are many ways to look at Aurora. She is beautiful in a dream, with the most beautiful features, and the most beautiful shape and form to look at. She is very graceful, with great shoulders. She is also quite tall, with a short, high waist and short body, with a fine waist to be perfectly covered with hair, that in order to appear her is tied with a ribbon. Aurora is also beautiful, with both the shape of both her feet and the height of her upper body. She wears the same dress as the rest of her form. Aurora is like the Cinderella in that she wears the black and tan costume of royalty on her right. The form of her costume is the same in every aspect as the Cinderella in that she has red and blue hair, red and blue skin, and she wears a short, black bow. Aurora wears her dress at night, and the dark blue veil that covers her dress is the only reason why Aurora is always smiling brightly when she looks to the sky. The white and black skirt is a very good thing and Aurora is very feminine. When looking at the right side of her face from her skirt, Aurora is a fairy. To her upper body she is graceful, and has long, clean shoulders, and she wears her dress with light blue

She paints us a pretty picture with every little detail, words like ‘bright’, ‘gay’ and ‘float’ convey the light, happy way she is feeling. Leila arrives at the ball to meet the chaos and so we are thrust into her happenings: we catch the different conversations around her, different actions, glorious descriptions of the women’s apparel. She seems so enthralled, so entirely caught up in her surroundings that one is surprised upon hearing her earlier thoughts, where she longed to stay home and take comfort in her dark surroundings- where she had a sense of foreboding, however subtle. But she gets over it fast, and keeps enjoying the ball. This, consequentially, leaves us wondering what is to happen, and whether Leila’s fairy tale world will come crashing down. This feeling is strengthened when we read ‘Leila felt the girls didn’t really see her’. The faces are ‘strange’ and ‘vague’- the perfection is slowly diminishing, but Leila either chooses to ignore it or does not really comprehend it at this point.

Here we meet the bald, fat man. He appears amidst a crowd of charming, suave, eligible young bachelors- coming as a great contrast and a slight shock to Leila. He stands out, and in a way limits Leila’s excitement; and in fact catalyzes or causes her transition from child to adult, although he appears only for a few moments.

Someone asks her to dance, and she floats away like “a flower that is tossed into a pool”. We see here that the flower simile has changed- symbolizing the beginning of her independence. However, the details now are becoming vague, the descriptions are no longer detailed and articulate. The azaleas are simply blurring colours around her- contrasting with the beginning
