The First Atomic Bombs
Robert J. Oppenheimer was the leader of a secret project in which atomic bombs were built. Oppenheimer was the leader of the project. The secret project built 3 bombs. The name of the secret project was called the Manhattan Project. One of the bombs was just a test subject to make sure it worked. The second bomb built was called Fatman. The third bomb was known as Little boy. The first bomb was tested on July 16, 1945. The bomb was tested on Alamogordo, New Mexico. Alamogordo is 120 miles south of Santa Fe, from there you can go to the Trinity site which is where the bomb was tested. Robert Oppenheimer named the site Trinity site because it has to do with one of his favorite poems. The poem by John Donne talks about the Trinity which has a relation with God. The second bomb that was made is called Fatman. The bomb weighed 5 tons. The bomb was carried in a B-29 (model of the plane) which was named Enola Gay. The pilot, Colonel Paul Tibbets, named the plane after his mother whose name was Enola Gay Tibbets. The bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The bomb killed 140,000 people in 1945 and killed 50,000 people in 1950 which is approximately 200,000. The third bomb to be made was named Little Boy. Bockscar was the plane that carried Little Boy. Little boy was dropped on Nagasaki although that isn’t the country the United States originally wanted to bomb. The country that the United States wanted to bomb was Kokura but due to the wind they had no choice but to bomb another country which happened to be Nagasaki.
