The slaves that were brought to the Americas from Africa from 1607-1776 were treated with great brutality and had to live and work in very punitive conditions. They had no rights and were treated more like animals or a piece of property rather than human beings. The first African slaves brought to the New World were taken to Jamestown where millions more would be shipped in the near future to be enslaved. Slaves were in great command in this time period and were needed so plantations and other industries could make positive profits.

Many settlers came to the Americas in search for gold, but were very unproductive in their search. Because the settlers had to send money back to the Virginia Company, who was looking for great profit from resources, they were in great distress. This situation kept getting worse as more settlers became a part of it until 1612 when John Rolfe began planting tobacco, which was soon known as “cash crops”, or crops that were raised in large quantities in order to be sold for profit. These tobacco plantations were bringing in profits like crazy, but the plantations were only getting bigger and bigger from here, therefore the labor and need for workers increased heavily. That is where the slaves come in. Because slaves were so easy and cheap to work, the tobacco industry, and many other industries, were bringing in lot more money.
