There are many advantages of using fiber over coax systems and free space. One major advantage is eliminating the problem of bandwidth allocation. Frequency assignments are allocated by the FCC for all communication ranges and the FCC will regulate everything from modulation techniques and EMI limits. With fiber optics these problem are eliminated. Another advantage of fiber optics is the high bandwidth available with low attenuation. From the time fiber optic networks were developed, attenuation dropped from 1000 dB/km to less than 0.16 dB/km. With this drop of attenuation, fewer repeaters were needed. Because of the cost reduction of using less repeaters fiber optics could be more efficient due to the longer distance spans repeaters could be placed. A fiber medium will also eliminate external electromagnetic fields. Without an Electromagnetic Field, crosstalk can be completely eliminated and multiple fibers can easily be bundled up together. Having the Electromagnetic interference completely eliminated provides very high security. Each user is isolated from the others and the desired signal remains within the fiber. Another advantage of the dielectric fiber is that it is much safer than coax wires. This fiber does not carry any current or electrical power which removes shock hazards. Also with a dielectric fiber, there is no risk that open circuits will create a hazardous situation unlike its coax wire counterpart, which has been the cause of many explosions and fires. If weight is an issue, fibers can be used for a dramatic weight reduction over coax wires. A fiber system can weigh thirty times less than a copper system and still obtain equal or better performance. Fiber also has a longer lifespan than coax wires. In addition, fiber is more resistant to corrosion.
