A woman decides to abort her fetus, an unwelcome pregnancy conceived out of will, then labeled as a murderer. A doctor stumbles upon a medical potential from the tissue of an unborn, then praised for the discovery. Life, however short or long a time, shares the same inevitable ending, death. So why rush it. Instead, keep an open mind. People will not live forever, but what if there were a cure, which offered everlasting life. Should this medical phenomenon continue happening, or are we profiting from murder by taking a life, the future life of a human being. It is time individuals took an unbiased glimpse at the fetal tissue research; is it murder or a scientific breakthrough?
Although fetal tissue research is still experimental, there has been long debate about its use stemming from its primary sourceÐaborted fetuses. The debate began in 1928 when researchers transplanted fetal tissue into patients suffering with diabetes (name, 2001). Although initial experiments failed, success quickly followed, and the healing and curative potential of the fetal tissue was recognized. The embryonic and fetal tissue used in research consists of tissue or cells from nonviable human embryo or fetus obtained through a spontaneous or induced abortion, or stillbirth (NIH, 1993). This fetal tissue research is especially important, Freedman and other scientist say, because human embryos and fetuses contain special cells, called stem cells. These stem cells are particularly vigorous and when implanted in other people and animals the cells are less likely to be rejected by the hosts disease-fighting cells. Stem cells may also evolve into many different types of cells, including blood, bone, and brain cells (Munro, 2000). In the early 1950s, fetal tissue was used to develop a vaccine for polio and rubella (name, 2001).
