SUVs Incompatibility
Sport Utility Vehicles are extremely popular now. A few reasons are for their all-terrain capabilities, the feeling of safety people have while their driving them, and their seating capacity. However, it is also for these reasons they are unstable. The false feeling of safety leads people to be careless while driving them, and leads people to feel “in charge” of the road , therefore creating a higher chance of an accident. Safety is the main issue that makes the sports utility vehicle inferior to the car. SUVs can be a safety threat for other vehicles’ occupants because their larger size endangers other vehicle’s occupants during crash, their larger size interferes with other drivers’ visibility, and their instability makes roll over possibilities.

SUVs are popular mainly because of their look. Also, they are very helpful for mothers or fathers to use for taking their kids to something like theater and baseball games and being able to carry more than just their child or children and instead fitting something like 5-6 kids in their vehicles.

This is the main reason for their continually growing popularity. Although SUVs are somewhat hard on gas mileage and are not the most economic cars on the road, people enjoy them because they can take bumps in the road and hold a higher number of people. SUVs can be a useful tool for commuting. Since it provides a huge space for the passengers, their existence can force people to use car pool in the freeway thus can slightly solve the traffic problem especially in the big cities or some states where people are supposed to have their own car to travel. SUV’s four wheel drive system also allows us to travel in the bumpy roads which are usually found in the mountainous area.

Although extremely popular and useful, there are some tremendous drawbacks of using SUVs. SUV’s are categorized by the government as a light truck, which definitely has a higher size than other cars. The higher size makes SUVs hit their giant bumpers directly into the passenger cabins of other car they collide with. Sometimes they climb up and on top of the other vehicle, crushing the other vehicle and the occupants inside. According to SUV Info Link, “Of the 5,259 fatalities caused when light trucks struck cars in 1996, 81 percent of the fatally injured were occupants of the car. … In multiple-vehicle crashes, the occupants of the car are four times more likely to be killed than the occupants of the SUV. … In a side-impact collision with an SUV, car occupants are 27 times more likely to die.”

Sports utility vehicles block the vision of the cars behind them. This does not allow drivers in the cars to be able to look ahead of the road. This can be very dangerous. For instance, an SUV’s driver is driving on the high way when suddenly; a deer comes out on to the road. The sports utility vehicle turns out the way avoiding it. Nevertheless, the driver of the car was not able to see ahead of the road because of the size of the sports utility vehicle in front. The deer was hit by the car and has horrible injuries. However, if only an ordinary car were there, the drivers would be able to have a better visibility.
