(n.d.).  What makes an organization successful, to be ahead of the competition?  Is it the hard working people employed that produce the end product? Or is the management team that is the driving force of successful organizations?  In actuality, it is both the management team working in conjunction with frontline staff.  It is the responsibility of the team leaders known as managers to effectively help the organization run smoothly and visualize the mission statement.  To accomplish such a feat, one must understand the fundamental functions of management.    The four functions of management include planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.  According to Bateman and Snell (2011), planning is the first function of management.  Planning involves managers uniting together and developing strategic goals and plans that will help the organization successfully surpass the current goals and accomplish new goals.  Then next function of management is organizing.  Organizing can compile all aspects of the organization to help pull together to reach the common goal.  The organizing function requires the utilization of not only staff but all other resources such as money and technology to collaborate to achieve the plan set forth by the management team.  The next step is leading.  Leading is a difficult step to achieve and maintain.  The process of leading is more than setting forth marching orders.  Leaders must have characteristics that engage employees to materialization into superior performers.  The final function of the management process is controlling.  Controlling allows a manager to monitor processes. The controlling process will allow a manager to not only monitor productivity and measure goals, but it will help the organization make strategic plans for future endeavors or in case issues arise that impact the success of the company.
