Conducting business in other parts of the world will be more prevalent in the future. I am excited to say that all six of you have been chosen to open one of our new state-of-the-art headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica.

When it comes to navigating and conducting business in Kingston, Jamaica, I will be providing an interpreter throughout your stay. Although most Jamaicans speak English, your interpreter will be a guide and resource to help in speeding up the process when being introduced. As a representation of our company, the way and manner in which you conduct yourselves will be very crucial to the success of our business. I will explain some helpful tips that maybe beneficial during your stay.

The extended family structure is very important to Jamaicans, and they keep a close-knit relationship with family members. Due to that factor, they rely heavily on each other and less on authorities. When greeting, a handshake, direct eye contact, and warm smile is important. Address people by (Mr., Mrs., or Miss). Once a friendship is established, do not be surprised if you are asked to call someone by his or her nickname. Networking and relationship building can be crucial for long-term business success in Jamaica. Standing closer than what you are accustomed to is the norm when having a conversation. Some Jamaicans may appear standoffish at first, but once they get to know you, they become more comfortable. When scheduling for appointments, send out your calendar invites two weeks in advance. Punctuality is expected, however Jamaican’s may be tardy at times. Finally and most importantly, always expect some type of small talk before any business conversation begins.

I hope these tips are helpful and don’t forget to use your interpreter when you’re uneasy about a situation. Culture plays a major role in Jamaica and we should try to be respectful of that.
