In our highly industrialized era there is a growing awareness about the exessive amounts of rubbish that people produce. We are about to be flooded by different types of garbage if certain measures arent taken. This rubbish is made up of domestic rubbish, commercial/business waste, special waste (mainly treated hazardous wastes) and some waste trucked in from outside the region. This does not include waste which goes to cleanfills, or is recycled, or dealt with in other ways. This essay will explore some causes of this problem and propose ways to solve it.

To begin with, different food producers decided that their products will sell better if they were packed in small-sized boxes and packedges. These colorful and attractive things go straight to the trashcan. More consuming produces more waste. Governments and businesses encourage consuming because it leads to high profits and development of state economy.

Many people dont know that rubbish doesnt break down very well in a landfill. Plastic, steel, aluminium and even paper and cardboard take tens or hundreds of years to break down. While modern landfills dont tend to cause dust or odour problems, nobody wants to live near one. As garden rubbish and kitchen scraps break down in a landfill they produce methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas (20 times worse than carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas) and can reach explosive concentrations in enclosed spaces such as basements. The lack of education and ignorance among young people has led to this.

The problem of garbage is very complicated. Wasting resources is bad business. It costs you money and it costs the environment. Burning rubbish isnt a solution – it pollutes the air and may release toxic substances. Composting and recycling are healthier options for you, your neighbours and the environment. If there is no other option for dealing with our rubbish then a modern, well-designed and operated landfill is a reasonable option for managing our rubbish. Governments are not interested of reducing consuming. Thus, the responsibility for cleaning up has to be taken by individuals and non-governmental organizations. Certain laws, regulating the percentage of packaging material per ton of product should be established. Moreover, interesting programs, involving people to participate can be developed. For example, bonuses for not asking for a plastic bag in supermarkets or for buying extra large packs of food.

In addition, everyone should become conserned about the future of human beings and our planet. If we do not wish to be buried in rubbish, we should think twice before buying things we do not need.
