When people think of security, they think of an individual whose purpose is to protect life and property and keep the peace. Security should promote a feeling of safety and give peace of mind in knowing that if a situation should arise there is someone present to take control of the situation. These individuals should exhibit professionalism and follow a strict code of ethics. Discussed herein is the definition of ethics, why they are important, and how they apply to the security industry. Further examination of how to create an ethical culture, the consequences of lack of ethics, and examples of ethics in the security industry is provided.
Defining Ethics
Ethics can be described as an individuals collection of moral principles that guide them to react or behave in a certain way. It is a compass that directs a persons perception of what is right and what is wrong and compels them to follow the path of good. An ethical persons behavior is consistently honorable, diligent, and full of integrity. Their actions would prove to be virtuous even when they thought that no one was watching them; their high moral standards and ethical behavior are consistent whether or not they are in the presence of others. For example, an ethical person would not break the law because doing so would be considered ethically and morally wrong, not because they might get caught. Ethics are the driving force, the conscience, of an individuals good and moral behavior.
Importance of Ethics
Ethics are important because they provide standards for distinguishing right from wrong, guide our reactions and behaviors, and show others the proper and ethical way to behave.
