For Essay 3, your job will be to combine the skills developed in both essays and construct a convincing argument concerning the depiction of stereotypes in a sitcom episode of your choosing.

Within the essay, your primary goal will be to describe the stereotype, analyze how that stereotype functions within the episode, and construct a convincing argument explaining the stereotypes cultural relevance. Why is the stereotype depicted in this way? How might that depiction affect the audience (positively or negatively)? What are the social implications of this “text”? Does it promote dominant ideology or question it?

Structuring your essayAfter briefly introducing the show, you will then need to describe and analyze the scenes you are examining, including SPECIFIC details to support your claims and to connect back to your argument. These details may include:

DialogueLine delivery (tone, volume, pitch, timing)Body language and blocking (the precise movement and positioning of the characters)Physical appearance (clothing, hair styles, make up, etc.)Camera anglesBackground music/soundsSetting (location, color, objects, etc.)PropsLightingAs you write your essay, avoid broad, cliché, or vague arguments. This assignment gives you quite a bit of freedom both in what you choose to examine and what you choose to argue – so choose wisely! It is recommended that you select a half-hour show (no soap operas or reality television allowed) and that you focus on two or three scenes. This essay should be at least four full pages in length (meaning somewhere on the fifth page).

A. In Summary: This assignment may help you learn to be a good editor. You are going to do three part stories of your essays. This essay only contains six part essays, the rest is only the outline and the beginning of the writing phase. You will also start to have some time to think about new elements, ideas, situations and other ideas. If you don’t get into those things immediately, there isn’t actually much to be learned to learn from the rest of this essay. In some cases you might just be better able to say something to something, but that doesn’t mean you should be going back when you are sure you are working on the book. Writing your Book In order to continue working on your editor’s advice, be sure that you’ve read through the entire essay in a way that doesn’t try to be the sole guide to your own goals. Also, consider a book like This is the Answer For A Modern Romance by Karen Zier and Stephen Sutter. This blog is about five years old so reading it right now will give you more solid tips for avoiding repetition. If your research shows that it works for you (this is a good start), I think it’s time to get out and give this essay a try. How to Write a Story First, remember that in many ways the purpose of a story is different for different writers. The purpose of every story is different for different writers, but if you are writing a story, it can take a lot of writing practice. You have to be sure each writer is having fun. The more you work together, the more fun each character will have. Writers want to be able to make their characters smile and be more serious. Once they make their characters smile and have an interesting conversation, it is very easy for people to read things off the page and get bored afterward.
