In the novel The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza keeps hope for the future by dreaming for another house of her own. Esperanza always says that her dream is a “house of my own”. Esperanza thinks “someday I will have a house of my own and that means she wants to get a house to herself. She also wants the house to be “quiet as snow”. Esperanza understands she wont get a house right away and Elenita, the which woman said, “A new house, a house made of heart. Ill light a candle for you (Cisneros, 64)”. She hopes and wont give up on it because she believes she will get it. Another way Esperanza keeps her hope for better days is by writing. Writing is very important to her and she said, “I put it down on paper and then the ghost does not ache so much. I write it down and Mango says goodbye sometimes (Cisneros, 110)”. She likes writing because when people write their emotions down, then people can talk and understand her. People can also understand how she feels, but she can only talk to Alicia. She can only talk to Alicia because she is the only one who understands her. Esperanza figured out that the only way she can communicate with people other than Alicia is by writing it down. Esperanzas life and hope shows for better days and many different setbacks that she needs to overcome.

Other people is the novel The House on Mango Street, who live on Mango Street hope for better days; Esperanza is trying to overcome many setbacks because she needs to. Esperanza gets hope from Gil when she witnessed his music box. “Then he starts it up and all sorts of things start happening or like marimbas only with a funny little plucked sound to it like if you were running your fingers across the teeth of a metal comb (Cisneros, 20)”. Gils jukebox is a symbol of hope trying a bright spot in a dark place. Esperanza was very mad at Sally because she lied to her. Esperanza said “Sally, you lied. It wasnt what you said at all. What he did. Where he touched me. I didnt want it, Sally (Cisneros, 99).” She thought love would be beautiful. I turned out to be forced upon her. Since it was forced upon her, it ruined everything she loved and hoped for. Esperanza had many setbacks, and high hopes that she will own a house of her own. She also hoped life would get better for her on Mango Street. Esperanza believes that she has high hopes because of the good and bad that happen; later life just goes on.
