A Civil War veteran, Captain Nathan Algren, (Tom Cruise) is hired by the Emperor Meiji to train Japanese troops for fight with the samurai, Katsumoto, (Ken Watanabe) who wants to stay in the Meijis way because all the new staff that America wants to bring to Japan such as railroads and telegraph now threaten those values and codes by which Samurai have lived and died for centuries. When Captain Algren is captured by the samurai, he learns their warrior honor codes from Katsumoto. Also, in this village Captain meets a family whose husband he killed in the battle. He becomes very close to the children and the woman. But then he understands that he needs to decide on which side he actually wants to be on.

The title of the movie is “The Last Samurai.” The movie represents the end of an era, when the destiny of two nations, Japan and the US, depends on life of one man: An American Civil War veteran, Captain Nathan Algren. The director of the movie is Edward Zwick. He also set movies such as “Glory” and “Legend of the Fall.” After he saw the “Seven Samurai” he always wanted to make a movie about Japanese culture and this film led him on the course of becoming a filmmaker. In this movie there are many famous actors. Tom Cruise plays the role of Captain Algren and he is also the producer of the movie. He played in movies such as “Interview with the Vampire,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Magnolia,” and many more. Ken Watanabe plays the role of the last samurai, Katsumoto. He plays in movies “The Sun Rises Again,” “Oboreru Sakana,” and such. Koyuki plays Taka, the sister of Katsumoto, the only female role in the whole movie. There are also actors Timothy Spall, (Simon Craham), Tony Goldwyn, (Col.Bagley), Hiroxuko Sanado, (Ujio), Shin Koyamada, (Nobutado), and more. The company it was released by is Warner Brothers. The movie was released in 2003. It has four stars and it is R rated.

10. Kataei, The Japanese Captain, the first girl to win the Kataei Award. He is married to his mother, Kaita. Kataei is introduced into a family of samurai people and their traditional sword ceremony and is a member of the Samurai Council. He is a big fan of sword traditions and the tradition of taking people captive, to the point where she decides to perform her traditional sword dance and start to defend Kataei against the English army. During the ceremony, Kataei is given an engraved cross for protection by Algren. When she is approached by an elderly man on his way that wants revenge on him, Kataei tries to escape but misses but is attacked by the swordsman. After she is rescued from the hands of the enemy, Kataei has to make a decision that she won’t give up her past but be willing to help the Englishman gain his revenge. Kataei fights the English with his sword, who refuses to fight. Kataei defeats the swordsman and has a special chance to become a knight who is stronger than the Englishman. By now, Kataei is starting to find that there is someone he can trust and for some reason he wants to be there for her, that will give the Englishman much hope. Kataei and her samurai friends are sent back to the U.S., where Kataei learns that their past is intertwined with their current situation. Kataei learns that the other side is behind what happened in the past and it is up to them to take back what they gained. This brings about a major conflict and finally defeats the English man who was protecting Kataei. The two return to their home in Kataei’s village, where they are introduced to Captain Algren, who is a swordsman with no other way to help him. Algren soon discovers Kataei is now the next person to die and the sword ceremony ends. Kataei and Algren head to see Kamiyama and give their trust to him and for the first time, Kamiyama begins to feel relieved at having to die the first time in front of Kataei’s heart. Kamiyama is shocked by what she is seeing, thinking about the sword’s significance to her life but then thinks she is just making some silly comparisons. Kamiyama is upset with Kataei and he wants her to go back to her village and tell Kataei that she will die, but Kamiyama never does. The other person is revealed to be Algren’s older brother,
