Nowhere in the dictionary does it state that the word “teenager” is defined by a persons choice of behavior, attire, or opinions. It is the medias warped perception that has influenced older generations to stereotype us. Were alcohol craving, violent, self-absorbed, promiscuous, suicidal drug users who lack concern for others. Crushing this stereotype seems to be one of the most difficult feats a teenager has. By the time we reach the end of our teen-age years, we still wont have been successful in defeating this all too common stereotype.
Why is it that we worry? I mean, adults can think what they please. We know that we arent always in sync with the media, so why does it bother us so much? I believe that how people perceive todays youth contributes to the way that we are treated. If I was to walk into a store with some friends, there would likely be a store representative following our every move in fear that we might steal something. However, if I was a 40 year-old female who was on my own, it would be different. I would likely be treated with much more respect. This kind of conduct is disappointing.
Although many would care to argue, there are a few of teenagers out there who actually grant respect to those who deserve respect. All that we ask is that this same kind of respect is returned. Yes, it seems as though the majority of teenagers are “bad” but the least you could do is give us a chance. Have an open mind when you meet someone new. Even if it is simply a brief second that you encounter them.
Teenagers arent bad people. Yes, sometimes we can get a little rowdy, or rambunctious, but its all in good fun. Most of the time, we arent trying to disturb anyone, or disgust anyone, were just being teenagers. Our fun can be found in various ways. We arent all about doing drugs for fun, or underage drinking. There are alternatives, and many of us do realize it. The teens can be one of the best times of our life; all we ask is that you let us have our fun and look at us with an open mind.
