Barbara experienced several managers through an employee’s perspective. All of the managers shared the similarity of negativity impacting their employee’s motivation.

Employees feel that the managers at Hearthside sit around but do not allow anyone else too. This is not good for the employee’s motivation because they don’t get any breaks yet they see other people who are getting paid more lots of breaks. Employees compare their inputs and outputs with the managers and see that the managers put less in and get paid more. This does not motivate employees to be better workers.

The view that other employees have of management at Hearthside is very negative. They see corporations as taking and taking from the employees but never giving back. When employees have this view, they will not be motivated to do a good job because when they give a lot of time and effort the only reward they get is the same small wage. This provides no motivation to give more effort and negative managers decreases the motivation to work hard even more.

At Hearthside, there is a mandatory meeting that consists of the manager telling employees only what they can’t do and reminding them that the break room is only a right. The manager seems to be only negative towards the employees and the only time employees are recognized is when they do something bad. Threatening and criticizing employees is also not a good way to motivate employees.

When a manager gives Gail, Barbara’s coworker, the right to park her car/home in the restraint parking lot, she gets really excited and claims that with benefits like these, she will never leave. This proves that a small favor/reward is huge in getting an employee to be satisfied with their work. However, since the managers are mostly so negative, this excitement probably won’t last very long and therefore won’t be effective. In order to motivate employees, managers must not only give rewards but treat employees positive as well.
