While there are many different ways to run a company, companies that learn how to become high performance teams have a better chance of success. A high performance team (HPO) is “designed to bring out the best in people and achieve sustained high performance.” ( Schermerhorn, 2003.) By maximizing the ability of their team to do their best and achieve higher performance levels, managers maximize their chances of success. HPOS emphasize respect for people.

High performance organizations organize their workflow around five specific areas, and follow policies that “enhance employee flexibility, skills and motivation” (Schermerhorn, 2003).Those five areas are employee involvement, self-directing work teams, integrated production technology, total quality management and organizational learning.

Employee involvement is important to an HPO because it shows how much decision making is actually done by employees. There are three basic levels of employee involvement. The first is no involvement; essentially, they come to work, do their jobs, and dont make any suggestions on any topic. These employees may drop off anonymous tips in suggestion boxes, or participate in roundtable discussions, but they dont participate in the process for making decisions that affect the company. The next level is moderate involvement. In this level there are more opportunities for day-to-day decision making. The last level is high involvement. These employees make decisions daily that involve the welfare of the company.

Self directing work teams are empowered teams that are encouraged to plan, do, and evaluate their work. These teams are important to an HPO because they know how to constructively criticize and increase their skill levels. Allowing employees to self-direct gives them confidence in their abilities, and encourages them to try new and improved methods. By allowing employees to examine their own productivity and come up with plans to increase it, companies are using the source of the productivity to raise ideas for how to improve it. This is important because employee expertise and knowledge can help to examine issues in ways that someone who doesnt do the job couldnt understand. “Self-directing teams strongly affect employee satisfaction and commitment and moderately affect performance” (Schermerhorn, 2003).

Integrated production technology is essential to an HPO because all organizations use technology. They use it to “combine the resources, knowledge and techniques and create a product or service output” (Schermerhorn, 2003). Two of the key components in integrated technologies are the “use of just-in-time production or service systems, and a heavy emphasis on computers to assist in designing products or services, controlling equipment in production processes and integrating the business functions” (Schermerhorn, 2003). The use of just-in-time systems involves companies working closely with suppliers to make sure they have just the right amount of material to finish the job. This is effective because it leads to less waste.

Practical use of integrated production and service system

Integrated production and service systems are essential to productivity of systems and to making their operations a real part of its production system. In the early 1960’s, a firm of IBM Research, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the IBM Laboratory in San Diego, California (now the IT Research & Development Center of the United States), developed an integrated production business management system (IBM, 1981). As the technology gradually evolved, the firms developed advanced, agile methods of managing this business in an integrated fashion, including automated processes. Some of these were developed by IBM researchers, with the help of others such as Paul Pemberton, Charles E. Pemberton and Bill K. Clark. Other systems, such as a combination of software and hardware, were developed by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the Office of Information Security (OPS), the Office for Information Security Management (OIIS), and the Office for Personnel and Management (OPM) as well as a small number of smaller firms. For example, the IOP developed the Standard IT Management System (STMS) (Office of Information Safety Policy of the US Department of Commerce).

The IOPS developed the IBM Integrated Product Management System (ITMS)-Standard IT Management System (ITMS) which is based on the IBM Management Management System for Information Security (MICS) (Office of Information Security Policy (OIPP)] (Rothman, 1981), and the ITEMS (Industry-wide Integrated Systems and Management for Operations Management and Operations Management) for Information Security (IMS) (Office of Information Security Policy, OIPP). The OIOIS developed IMS for all of the Information Security industries, including Computer Systems, Data Systems, System Management, Applications, Research & Development, Business and Economic Services, Information Technology, Materials Science and Construction, Business Management, and Industrial Management.

Many businesses with the IMS System built out of software are now incorporated by these firms. The IMS system was incorporated by three firms, IBM Research, IBM Research Incorporated, General Motors (NYSE:GM), and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HP). The IMS System will have a few different variants, such as using only a computer. The IMS System will be used to manage an integrated production system for specific functions in the business. Integrated production system management systems are important in the creation of a business to create, develop and operate large and small businesses, both locally and over many years. They are best used when creating business management plan designs to support business needs and to provide flexibility, cost savings, increased performance without increasing or decreasing cost or expense.

With the incorporation of the IMS System, the IBM business management platform and the software integrated control system in ITMS were created separately and have grown together to support the current IMS technology today.
