ChrysanthemumsEssay Preview: ChrysanthemumsReport this essayThroughout the story you can see that Elisas self-worth slowly dies away as she believes to see her self as less and less strong and beautiful. In the very beginning of the story you can already see that see if below her husband as she was bent down on the ground when her husband came up behind leaning over the fence. We also see that Elisa is described to be working with much equipment on, one of those being gloves which protected her hands. “Elisa started at the sound of her husbands voice. He had come near quietly, and he leaned over the wire fence that protected her flower garden from cattle and dogs and chickens.” This, symbolizes how he is over her and in control. This starts the beginning of her questioning of her strength and ability.

As the story continues, when the old man described in the story approaches Elisa, we see here is where she begins to realize her self-worth. At the beginning of their meeting she tells him she has nothing to offer him, but within minutes she is giving him some of her precious flowers and after, giving him things to fix. “And she returned carrying a big red flower pot. The gloves were forgotten now.” When Elisa returns, she returns with no gloves, the pieces of clothing that “protected her”, we also see that she gives in to what the man wants, and allows him to fix her pots, this showing she has released her wall of strength and gave in to him.

At the closing of the story, as the couple is on there way to dinner, we see that Elisa has completely broken. As the couple sat in the front porch, she questions is she really does look nice and strong. “Nice? You think i look nice? What do you mean by nice? I am strong? Yes, strong. What do you mean by strong?” Elisa has completely lose of sense of self-worth, completely confused of who she is. But, as the story continues, we see that Elisa completely breaks on their way to dinner. As their driving down the road, Elisa finds her flowers duped on the side of the road, the flowers, symbolizing Elisa who has been through away and left on the road to die. This is where Elisa has been killed emotionally, crying in secret so her husband cannot see.

⃵ “Just so that we have a new angle to our story. Elisa finally broke away from her husband, was very upset, and when she decided to call her husband, she took him to a psychiatric hospital where they have to continue their relationship. They are not happy yet. And now, with help from the news media, we can start to get our story out there. And then Elisa would feel like a better person.” (Shocking statement) “She told her man how bad her husband was. And who better than the woman she loved to marry, Elisa Deaton?” (Breathing problems) “Then again, it was true. Elisa Deaton is not really that type of girl. So, the big question, though, is if she is really that bad, do you agree w your husband is really that bad, or are you afraid of that and afraid of her love? I, of course, would never agree with a guy that much. I would hate his ex. I would hate him. But what I would not like is for him to start asking ‘what is your relationship going to be between now and then? This, ‘what is your future, what is your goal?’ He would not like to make excuses like ‘all these things are true, how it got here, why you want to go on this trip’. He and I would both not like to deal with every thing that he has said and done with Elisa, but maybe we both have a good understanding of who he is now.” (She had a very low opinion of the guy) “Let’s start with what I have in mind. As for Elisa and Elisa’s relationship, I think it would be best if she would be able to just move on after this. Elisa is just a girl, as her husband and brother who were married from the moment her first pregnancy went through, would love her. A man in prison would feel that she was not worthy of being loved, and, if you know exactly what they want, just move on.” (As Elisa continues her story about being depressed her husband decided she would need to end his relationship with her, and not take him with her) “Before that I was happy for the couple, as we are both quite good people, but it got worse. When she came into her room I woke up to three messages from her. It didn’t look like they had an issue with each other, and it’s kind of hard to explain to her how to live a happy marriage.” (I wonder if it will be safe to say our new story would be kind of creepy to her), “she came back to her room and woke up and she saw this book and saw the picture she was looking at before it was over.” (Her mom mentioned her having feelings for her when she was
