When we think of someone being abused we often think of children or young adults, but not everyone thinks of[a][b] the grandparents being abused. This abuse can take place at nursing home, but in general the elderly can be abused at their caregiver’s home or their own home by a caregiver or family members. Abuse can happen when a person who is dealing with the elder may become overly stressed and take it out on the person who is the easiest to control, or even a loved one who is not able to handle giving care to the elderly. Some of the issues that are associated with elderly abuse are Physical, Self-neglect, and Financial abuse. With each one of these elderly abuse, they have different signs to look for, and no matter what signs you find, all of them should be reported. Physical abuse on the elderly would be the easiest to spot because of the signs of bruises, and broken bones. Many might say that the elderly can bruise easier than others, but black eyes, busted lips or a broken arm (or other bones besides the hip) could be from abuse. [c][d][e]Self-neglect is another form of elderly abuse, and many elderly people are “sit” in their ways and may refuse to change. When the elderly does not change to help themselves out, this is when the caregiver needs to contact the proper people to get the person the help they need. When a caregiver sees that the elderly refuse to bath themselves or allow someone to perform this task, this is a sign of neglect. When you see an elderly person who has 30 or more cats and will not clean their house, this is also a form of abuse on the elderly, the elderly person may not fully understand how it is abuse, but it is. Financial exploitation of the elderly could be the hardest one to spot, because a family member may not always know where their older loved ones are spending their money. When a caregiver takes care of the elderly, they have to take on the [f][g][h]responsibility of helping them pay bills, and ensure that they have the funds for food for the months. Some elderly people have had their caregivers steal their funds, and they are left without lights or food. Some of these people will refuse to call the police to report the crime, because they might be embarrassed, or they could be worried they may have to go into assisted living. With elderly abuse along with financial exploitation, the government had put forth laws to help protect the elderly from people who would abuse them (Elder Law, 2007), but tougher laws need to be in place to help the elderly more.
