Caltex – Track and Trace Implementation
Assignment A
Project Name – Track and Trace Implementation
Company Name – CALTEX
1. BACKGROUND
Caltex is seeking to improve its customer service offerings within the oil and gas
market while differentiating itself from their competitors. Container track and tracing
systems plan to offer benefits that will inform stakeholders (client, vendor, and couriers)
of real time location of items. The system is expected to provide quality information on
arrival and departure status, handling of incidents and mishaps, increase visibility, reduce
operational cost, and improve logistic efficiency. Relevant interfaces support information
and communication technology infrastructure in regards to hardware, software and
monitoring equipment.
Implementing a Tracking and tracing system would provide Caltex with a
competitive advantage in the oil and gas industry and provide clients with transparency of
their shipments. Supply chain complexity would be substantially decreased due to the
diversity of product variant and traceability. Integration of a radio frequency
identification (RFID) technology which has the capability to communicate with ingress
and egress points would provide an automated system, reduce shipment errors, and
support decision making. RFID is the best alternative because it reduces paperwork,
mitigates human error, and improves data accuracy.
