Probation and parole is what gives prisoners in today’s prison system the ambition and want to better themselves. This paper will explain rehabilitation in prison and where it originated from. Also we will explain how parole is different from mandatory release and how probation differs from other ways of sentencing. We will also debate community corrections and its definition as well, we will critique the current rehabilitation options and if there are better options or solutions that may be utilized in the prison system organization.

The definition of rehabilitation means to return to a previous form. In criminal justice, rehabilitation is introduced as a design attempt to change behavior and attitudes of inmates, focusing on the prevention of an offender’s future criminal behaviors. The importance of rehabilitation is clearly proactive and concentrated on preventing crimes in the future. Correctional representatives believe this might be their most important job to protect society in the long run by decreasing the recidivism rate. However, it is doubtful whether the efficiency of correctional programs should be considered solely by the recidivism rate. No program or person can force inmates to modify their actions or to make good decisions to stay away from crime, particularly months after they leave the supervision of correctional personnel. The environments and situations for these offenders are different from case to case. Although, recidivism might not be the appropriate measure of the success of rehabilitation programs, is expected to be the most looked at and utilized. Corrections try to rehabilitate offenders in lots of ways. Number one is, corrections programs are focused at trying to decrease the inmate’s motivation to do future crimes. Despite the fact, there are many logics, why people commit crimes, correctional facilities give psychological counseling to help inmate’s understand the causes that set off certain behaviors, anger management and many programs to help inmates’ notice situations that are dangerous in which they might act wrongfully, and sensitivity training to get prisoners comprehend the impact of their criminal activities on their victims and their families (Seiter, 2011). Secondly, correctional programs try to form competencies in offenders that may aid them to avoid problems that may intensify their likelihood of carrying out their crimes. These programs are built to help inmates to boost their educational needs, establish vocational skills, or reduce the intake of drugs and alcohol. Lastly, correctional programs may simply have a purpose of improving prisoner’s decision making. Some of these correctional programs help inmates better their decision making skills while acknowledging the values and potential outcomes of their criminal activities.
