Effects of Social Media on SocietyEssay Preview: Effects of Social Media on SocietyReport this essayEffects of Social Media on SocietyIn the 20th century, technological advancement has revolutionized the way of life (DuBose, 2011). Improved internet connections have transformed the world into a global village by removing the conventional barriers to communication. Social media is one of the most innovative features on the internet platform. The technology, which has improved communication, has imparted peoples lives in many ways (DuBose, 2011). Social media platforms such as Facebook, Tweeter, and LinkedIn have not only revolutionized socialization process, but also facilitated the expansion of democratic space and business operations. Although social media has affected people in many positive ways, the invention has some negative effects that cannot be ignored.

Social media has changed socialization process significantly. As a result, people have shunned the tradition way of communication for the adoption of new communication channels facilitated by social media. With Facebook and Tweeter, a person can communicate with any person from any country in the world (DuBose, 2011). Besides making communication faster, the social media platforms have reduced the costs of communication less than the conventional communication networks. The transformation has not only eased communication but also changed the way people interact with each other (DuBose, 2011). Unlike with the use of telephones and written letters, the adoption of social media has allowed the ability of a person to meet and communicate with new people. This creates new social connections that expand social circles and interactions.

In democracy, the system works best with the involvement of most people. The acceleration of the adoption of social media has sparked the access to information among citizens of many countries perpetuating democracy (Fuchs, 2012). This has been possible because social media has availed tools that encourage and support alternative voices in participating in the political arenas, which in previous years have only been for the political elite people. Social media users, through the social sharing, have the opportunity to broadcast different political messages and views on different political agendas. Politicians too are able to share their sentiments directly with the people on the local level, which ensures the government expands its democratic reach. In the process, many people take part in politics expanding the democratic space.

The importance of social media on democracy and global development.

The social media of people in the developing world can also lead democratic leaders to express their views via their respective social media platforms. As a consequence, the international community is seeing massive numbers of young people sharing their information across all media platforms. One example, China’s Tiananmen Square was in 2016 where many people shared political views via social media platforms, mainly via the use of social media platforms, not only for their own political projects, but also for a political agenda as well (Chen, 2012). However, many social media users are still unaware of the social media of these young people and are not yet able to effectively access their political platform, which they may, through the use of social media platforms, take advantage of to reach out and vote. On the other hand, people and organizations such as MoveOn in China (Mapping the future of Social Media for China), the People’s Bank of China, and the Chinese Society of Social Artists have been working to engage the social media of young people to reach out and vote, showing how a political action based on social media can reach beyond people’s own personal political views (Chen, 2012, p. 19). Thus, the recent development of social crowdfunding, a new platform based on crowdfunding of political campaigns in China, has allowed this type of expression to emerge in the global social networks. Although the development of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and LinkedIn China may only have recently begun, social media users themselves in general have been doing much greater work with their social media platforms in developing China’s democratization. As Facebook in China, the biggest social media platforms for social media users, have not only allowed new social media users to reach out and vote, but also increased the participation of social media users in making political activism in China as an effective tool (Chen, 2012).

Social media support, for the individual citizen.

People’s social media must not only be able to use social media to reach out to political supporters, but also encourage and contribute more to the development of democracy. As long as this social media support can be used by people and their leaders to promote, express, and promote the political process, the development will continue. We hope that the new social media platforms will further serve as platforms for social media users sharing information with the public, for people to actively participate in the political process and influence political decisions and decisions (Fuchs, 2012).

As always, social media support requires people to consider their own privacy considerations. However, while we acknowledge that we cannot always know the content of our social media uses, and understand who and what is being held and communicated on social media platforms, it may be useful for a good number of reasons. These considerations include whether social media use is allowed and what is in question.

Privacy Considerations

There is often a lack of disclosure in terms of who is posting and what is being shared. The main reasons for this include the following:

Personal security – it comes as a surprise that online social media have become used for these purposes so often. The primary focus of social media is to convey personal and relevant information about an individual’s profile on social network. It can also involve linking to other websites that offer an alternative or new social networks.
