Leading Edge Technology vs. Bleeding Edge Technology

The two types of technology development are bleeding edge and leading edge. Bleeding edge technology is technology so current its development is not complete and has many issues. Leading edge technology is technology that has been tested and works to within the specifications given by the developer and is ahead of its predecessors. Bleeding edge technologies eventually can become leading edge technologies with the proper development and testing. Consumers can make informed decision when purchasing technology and decide if the technology is bleeding edge or leading edge. When technologies converge to create a superior product that takes the best of the separate products this is called technology convergence.

Flash drives were introduced in 2000 as an answer to the need to have a small external and portable device to transfer data from computer to another (Sung, 2012). For years consumers had relied on floppy disks, CD, and DVD drives to transfer and store data. New uses and adaptations for the flash drive come almost every year, and the demand is increasing with each new technology.
