Techno Greats Company Analysis
Part – 1Synopsis: This case is about a company named “Techno Greats” that is specialized in researching the substitutes of blood and plasma for surgical procedures. It has its branches in Calgary and Vancouver. Ed Worthy joined Techno Greats as a researcher in Vancouver lab after his graduation. Firstly, he was promoted as a Lab Supervisor and then he became the Assistant Manager over there. After that, he was transferred to Calgary Lab where he was made Assistant to the General Manager. Ed Worthy then got promotion as the General Manager after the retirement of the previous General Manager. He is very creative and tries to come up with some new ideas every time. He always attempts to improve himself and learns from his mistakes. He is very friendly with all his co-workers and tries building a positive work- environment.Symptoms:Operational-Ed is well focused and knows all he needs to do. But all his co-workers are following a Scalar Chain as they are dependent on him. They don’t even make minor decisions related to their work. For instance, when the new trade guy didn’t show up, Rodney Mohara (the Facilities Supervisor) asks Ed if he was able to arrange one for him. This clearly depicts a situation where everyone is fully-dependent on the General Manager as they do not try to handle any issue by themselves whether it is small or big. All such kind of things complicates Ed’s condition and increases his work load. He is distracted by other workers as they all come to him to get help making each and every single decision. Consequently, whenever he thinks of doing something exceptional, his thoughts become unstable and he faces dissatisfaction. Ed himself hasn’t completed some past tasks that were supposed to. Poor decision making is the main aspect resulting in failure to achieve goals Also, there was a lack of objectives in the acquisition of government grants and loans area.Behavioural –Ed is very stressed out because of vast work load. He is busy all the time and does not even have any time for his family or other recreational activity. Moreover, he makes decisions based on his skills, training and knowledge. As he has played every role from researcher to Assistant Manager, he must use his past experience while making decisions. His mind is innovative and thinks of so many unique ideas but remains unsuccessful while implementing these practically. He plays a very good decisional role as per Mintzberg’s managerial roles but fails when it comes to motivational role. He is not an inspiration for his co-workers.Problem:Firstly, the major problem is that Ed Worthy is not focused on critical functions of management: Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling. He makes schedules in his mind but fails to implement these virtually. Poor time management can be seen in every task he performs whether it is a conversation with the sales executive or answering Vice President’s questions in an important meeting. He doesn’t accomplish all the tasks at time, he makes a priority list of all the tasks that are needed to be done but fails to fulfill these at time. Furthermore, all the workers keep distracting and bothering him.
