DUBOIS VS WASHINGTON
After reading both exerts from both Du Bois and Washington, I would have to agree with Washingtons views. In his Speech, he pleaded with both races to join forces and he told that is the only way could move forward with progress. This is one of the reasons why I sided with him. One could also compare this with the famous Quote, “Together we stand, divided we fall.”. Washington was more patient than Du Bois because, he emphasized that progress would be a slow process and he the African Americans to be patient. Washington also claimed that for one to successful in the American culture. They would have to be educated meaning, they would have to be able to read and write.

Now for the fun part of this essay: the chance to voice my opinions, which I have been trying so hard to contain as I am supposed to be stating facts. I position myself as an accommadationalist. I believe in compromise and working together. I believe that you can be the best as what you are without the inclusion of race. I am not the Black Charge Nurse; I am just the Charge Nurse. I base that on the fact that I have earned that position based on my skills, educational level, and experience in my field. I believe that Du Bois who was raised by a single mother abandoned in a predominately white area, tried to fit in until a little girl rudely reminded him that he wasnt white. I believe he was a product of his environment, a light skinned boy not too noticeable by the people of the town because he was smart, thus enabling his ticket out. I believe that he spent the rest of his life trying to prove that although he was “light bright and damn near white” that he was black enough to know the culture, to get into the veil and to know his “two-ness”. In the Forethought of “The Souls of Black Folk” his closing line is to tell you he is black. Why must he tell you this, because if you saw his picture, would your mind form the unasked question? Is he or isnt he? Today that is still a part of the Negro problem. What makes you black enough? Do you have to be a teacher of all, starting with the illiterate and teaching them to know the alphabet before giving them a college history book? Do you encourage your people to work together with others who can teach them even though they may have wronged them in the past or tell them to continue to fight with those people as they have for so long? Do you open your mind to look at the ideals this country was founded on and see that slavery albeit wrong, was a business enterprise to build this new country, or do you punish every white person for sins of the past? Today, with all the opportunities allotted me I cannot get into Harvard,
