Wake up, it was just a dream! Dreams vary from being inspirational, auspicious, or fantastical. An aspirational mind set can be a result from a fortuitous dream or vision. The Dream Act, the Development Relief and Education of Alien Minors act, remains a vision for the illegal immigrants in the United States. The beneficiaries of the Dream Act will have to wait because of the rejection from the legislative body. The disallowance of the Dream Act will leave immigrants continuously in search of hiding spots.
Immigrants are basically illegal citizens in the United States who constantly have to hold back their talents and skills because they are stuck in the dark. Because of their illegal status, immigrants are not granted the chance to receive the education they deserve. The Dream Act is the assistance that immigrants need. It was first introduced by Senator Richard Durbin and Representative Howard Berman on August 1, 2001 (Miranda 3) and was newly introduced again on March 26, 2009. The acts purpose is to assist alien minors by giving them the opportunity to enlist in the military or attend college. They will get the chance to receive a higher level of education, an education they very much deserve. (Dann 2)
To immigrants, the Dream Act may be a life changing opportunity their ancestors never got the chance to acquire. Although the Dream Act may appeal to many immigrants, it is made up of many requirements. There are many necessary qualifications that must be fulfilled in order to be an eligible applicant for the Dream Act. One of the qualifications demands that the person must be present in the United States for at least five consecutive years prior to the enactment of the bill. (Abaddon 1) Second, the immigrant must have entered the United States before the age of 16. Third, they must be between the ages of 12-35 when applying. Fourth and finally, they must have “good moral character” (Abaddon 4) “Good Moral Character” accommodates the fact that an immigrant must not have any criminal records and evidence that they are a “law abiding citizen” Since there are numerous different qualifications required, the process to apprehend the gainful aspects of the legislative takes a great quantum of time.
There are a profuse amount of beneficial outcomes that would result from passing the Dream Act. Passing the Dream Act will contribute to the militarys recruitment efforts and readiness, it would expand the recruiting pool, and would be included as part of the Department of Defenses 2010-2012 strategic plan. The global economy would be more competitive due to the nations efforts to have the highest proportion of college graduates. Economic benefits also include cutting deficit by $1.4 billion, increasing government revenue by $2.3 billion, and by adding $1.4 – $3.6 trillion in taxable income.
