In domestic violence cases in different states domestic abuse carries different weights as to how much punishment a person receives for spousal abuse. For the most part, domestic violence is left up to the victim to report. In states such as Texas, the victim is to get a protective order issued by the judge. This order protects the individual by law from the partner or spouse. The primary purpose of a protective order is to prohibit the abuser from continuing the abuse against the victim or against other members of the household. When a protective order is granted, law enforcement agencies receive a copy and are required by law to record the information in the order into a database.

Domestic violence is patterned behaviors that a person renders to another person. These behaviors become problems that a person cannot control.
