Man’s Best Friend
Man’s Best Friend “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” This love is demonstrated with wet kisses, where you can feel their warm breath and sharp whiskers. Or their wagging tails, that sometimes scares you when it hits furniture and makes a loud noise. But the cutest expression of love is when they move their soft ears in an attentive way while moving their head to the sides. All of this show why almost every human on earth has a dog as a best friend. A recent Associated Press poll reveals that more people like dogs than like cats.  In a survey of just under 2000 people, 59% of who were pet owners (mostly of dogs or cats) 74% said they liked dogs “a lot” but only 41% said the same thing about cats. Only 2% said they disliked dogs “a lot”, but 15% feel that way about cats. Even though my favorite dogs are Emma and Lucy, which are the dogs I have now, I will show you my journey regarding dogs.         These adorable qualities have open up my heart and made me vulnerable to these furry animals. But what really makes me melt for them, is how every time I walk inside my house, they jump around, wag their tails and make this high pitch noises, just to show me how happy they are to see me. I can’t even give the first step into my house that they will start jumping to my legs, so I pet them a little and talk to them in a high pitch voice. My First Steps        My first dog ever was a blonde Shar-Pei named Tulio.  I don’t remember a lot of him because I was about 4 years old when my parents brought him home. What I do remember is how enormous he was compared to me, I would have sworn he had a hammer as a tail, we would just wag it one time and it would tumble me. But this dog was only 1 year with us, he was too big for our house, even though he was trained, he still would take my shoes and hid them and chew them.  After that we had, a Fox Terrier, it was my brother’s 8th birthday present. He had white and black spots, kind of like a Dalmatian but with bigger spots. He had a white stripe that went up her nose and connected to the white on her chest and shoulders.  My brother named him Spanky, because of the movie Little Rascals, where one of the protagonists was called Spanky. The Little Brave Dog Who Could        One day, my brother and I were out walking in our neighborhood with our friends. Even though we had a 4-year difference, we got along with the same friends in our neighborhood. There was nothing particularly special about that day, until a little dog escaped from the house right around the corner. In our neighborhood, we know in which houses, you can find the dangerous dogs, that way we would never encounter when walking our dog or just walking by ourselves. My brother and I stopped and watched with a panic face and with no clue of what to do, while this small dog stared at us.  Even though it was a little dog, I know that old saying that says, “Big things come in small packages,” even if the dog looks innocent, lovable and like it won’t do much to us, we are still scared. Our street ended in a roundabout so there was nowhere to run and nowhere to hide.  The growling became louder as the dog, kept coming closer to us, the dog seemed like he was out of his mind, my brother just looked back for a second to check if there was someone coming that could help us. The dog took advantage of that moment and bit my brother around his ankle. Out of nowhere, our courageous Spanky ran from the outside of our house and started defending us and barking till the other dog left with his tail between his legs. So, we took my brother to our house and called my mother, my mom almost fainted and my dad wanted to look for the owner of the dog and make him pay for every bill in the hospital.         With over 78.2 million dogs in the United States, its important to understand how over 4.5 million people in the US get bitten by dogs every year. Every year, more than 800,000 Americans receive medical attention for dog bites; at least half of them are children. Children are, by far, the most common victims of dog bites and are far more likely to be severely injured. Owners are the ones responsible for following leash laws and other legal restrictions that help keep people safe and stop dangerous dog attacks before they happen. Just because a dog breed is listed in this section doesnt mean they are dangerous. A dog owners behavior toward his or her dog will determine the dogs personality. If a dog owner encourages aggressive behavior or abuses their pet, the dog will be more likely to attack or bite.        Spanky looked like a nurse in a body of a dog, he was so attentive, he knew his owner was not feeling good. Dogs, in particular, have several special ways that help them indicate if a person is ill or not. One of those ways is with their amazing olfactory abilities, or rather, their miraculous sense of smell. Certain breed of dogs can have up to 40-50 times the scent receptors than us humans, making their sense of smell about 100,000 times stronger than ours! When a person is ill, their body chemistry will change, and a dog’s sensitive snout may be able to detect these subtle changes, letting them know we are sick. Dogs can be trained to sniff out volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the human body, helping with early detection for illnesses, including cancer.
