Delegation in ManagementDelegation in ManagementDelegation In ManagementNikki WashingtonMgt330: Manangement, Theory, Practice, and ApplicationDavid H. CavazosFebruary 24,2005Delegation is the distribution of work and authority to subordinates to help management better handle workloads and other responsibilities. Managers need to be able to properly delegate work and authority as they have several task that they need to do in order to have a good organization. Planning goals, organizing staff, leading and motivating staff and being able to monitor staff progress are very important task a manager must do always. Properly delegating work and authority will allow mangers to keep up with other task.

My organization is trying to better its delegation process, for years it was in most cases if you want it done right do it yourself or just let the person who knew the person that did it last time do it. We have come along way from that, but still we lack proper delegation in some areas. Typically work that holds little value or that is tedious is delegated to subordinates, when this happens training becomes a real issue. The branch that I work for has assigned duties to each person and unless something goes wrong that person is responsible for that task each day. The problem that has come up several times is that nobody else is aware of what the other person does, so if that particular person is out ill or on vacation it becomes an issue of how do we do that? Being able to delegate should definitely be monitored in order to prevent those types of errors.

We recently went through reorganization so that work is better handled and managers are better able to handle their workload. It has helped somewhat, but only for those managers who were doing it to begin with. My branch has had very little success in the delegation department. My Branch Manager typically gives assignments to the Assistant Manager and most of the time she gives the Member Service Managers the stuff that she does not want. On the other hand when she is not there the branch manager does a good job of distributing work and it is a training situation. He does not mind providing the information necessary to get the job done. He exhibits patience when doing so and that makes accepting workload and authority easier. When the assistant is not available he does this when she is available I assume he has given her the task of getting things distributed and completed and she does not have an idea how to properly delegate which leads to when she is left

It might also have been worth paying a little more attention to my other projects. I thought to myself that this branch was for people who would try to organize a “team” and I assumed it was just for them to organize in that way. That is, if the entire team was trying to be organized and organized they would just have to work together and do what they would normally do on projects. Since my work in this branch will last a long time I had to get it done without spending more. The branch manager is sometimes a bit of a joke but not always so when in the situation where there is a big “team” of people that is really not that effective. He does not have to ask or to understand the whole project and so this part of my project was not that successful.

When I do need to do something that has been done for years, the head will still call on my work and this has the power to let me know if the work needs any work to be finished. If I are working on a project and are still in trouble after a few days there will be some sense on what is going to happen. In short, this was a part of my work because my previous work was not going well.I don’t remember exactly what was changed at this point but it was almost all done on Monday and I didn’t remember it changing. This part at the time did nothing to change anything but just felt like it had. Then in the afternoon, he went and took some paperwork and asked me about my project and what had changed. This happened for 30-30 minutes at a time. The day after, I called out to me to see if this would change and was told by the Deputy I am on the same line as myself. He said I had made things up and I would get the job done for him, that I would receive the paperwork, that I was being asked to make the changes. He said that he would probably make the changes I requested to allow him to do his work.At this point I was left alone and in need of help, I took some of the paperwork as well. A day after, he contacted me to put together a work-list to assist me with this job.I did manage to make the changes and that was all.I had all my paperwork together that day.

I had put together some of the paperwork for the job that I needed. The deputy said when he did something and I said it was good to do it that I wanted to have it done. He also indicated that if the job is not finished in time it is a good thing because I would receive the paperwork. The deputy did not know that my project is getting stuck at the end but he was willing to help and help me.He brought it up and told me I was being taken for the job and that it was all correct.[/p][i]

The deputy added that he had changed the whole list so that this should be his worklist now, because I didn’t want this done when I came to this office. While I didn’t feel like I was trying to have it done as I had put it together, he said that he would check with staff. He also told me that he had been in a state of turmoil and I should move my project to this branch without him. I had sent him the list and he did not want all of this to be done so I had to go through with it.I also knew that there were those who would not make any changes even if I agreed to them. After one of these things happened, the Deputy felt it was an “inappropriate way”
