To Each His Own
Larana as closing down detective work, and leaving us to think about other things in relation to crime (focus on criminals not detectives)
background
We are looking at a man who is an amateur detective, and he is the first real amateur that we see. Dupin only thinks about cases, Holmes is in private practice. This man is a real amateur. He is a detective in the idea that we are all detectives – give us a case and we will develop a theory about it.

everybody else in the town is also a detective – but they have already solved the crime! (just not talking about it)
Theory about detective fiction
A crime presents its investigators with a picture. If analyzed by the detective permits a sure solution they must arrange the details of the picture.
Thrillers represent a genre that is safe – because the events are separate from that which we consider to be reality – or capable of happening in the real world

Important part of this book:
Larana goes to see his friends father
Larana thinks this guy will one day nod off into sleep and be dead
but then the man speaks
says: page 70.
…commentary about revenge. if dead man is dead, then we must send live man (murderer) to meet him.
To be sicilian is to think, the man is dead, so I had better give a hand to the murderer (like him b/c he is probably in my family) but if the murdered man is in my family,I have to kill the murderer. There are no other options.

HE IS JUST READING OFF QUOTES WITH NO REAL SIGNIFICANCE. Started talking about a historical background of sicily. THIS IS NOT IMPORTANT. I am mad at you for making me sit here.

now hes laughing about how italy has lots of corruption. and that there is mafia influence in italy. no shit. they had a monopoly over certain trades and institutions – family run.

connect this to To Each His Own. –> the setting of this novel mirrors a corrupt version of italy, family allegiances. Towns people know what is going on but dont talk about it.
