Writing
After reading Five Definitions of Writing, I believe written text cannot completely replicate face to face conversation. In the definition for Writing as Communication I gathered that language is simply a medium in which we convey our meaning. All, or most, writings are written in order to be read or remembered at a later time. Though, despite how well written, it seems written language can be perceived in ways by the reader that the writer did not intend. But what can the writer do in order to make their language completely encapsulate their original meaning so that it is unmistakable to the reader?

I do not think that it is even possible to completely convey one’s meaning through the medium that is language. Writing as Expression adds the writer’s emotions and the self into what is trying to be conveyed to the reader rather than just solid information. While I feel that there is a difference between writing as to convey information and writing as to convey emotion, I think that the self is in all forms of writing. Even if one was to write in a non-expressive way, the self still plays a role in what wording is chosen. I don’t see the self as a result of expressive writing but rather the driving forces behind it, prior to any writing.

Writing as Art is where the different definitions of writing come together along with what even constitutes as “Art.” I noticed throughout the definition that once the writings were considered a form of art, suddenly there are fierce debates over what constitutes “good writing” and “bad writing.” The writer now seems to be “consciously in control” to the reader. When it comes to Artistic Writing, both the writers and the readers seem to push to find what “does and does not qualify” or simply, what constitutes “good writing” and “bad writing.” But the main problem with Artistic Writing is that art itself is difficult to define.

When reading a piece of music literature it is almost unmistakable how the composer/writer wants the piece to be read. Even still, people will make their own versions of how to play the piece and have their own opinion on what the piece is saying. This shows me that no medium can completely recreate what we mean to say in a way that it is unmistakable. See, we have studied instruments and the human ear to figure out all the minute differences in music that we humans are capable of hearing and yet there is still a level of misconception while reading music language. This being said, the english language is far less strict than the language of music in it’s rules so it seems an even more innaccurate medium for expressing one’s meaning.

The definition for Writing as Encounter seemed the most farfetched to me as I do not believe that some outside power can influence one’s own writing. Nor do I believe that writing can bring idea’s out of you.
