Smart Goals
S.M.A.R.T. Goals are goals which are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. By creating a SMART goal, instead of a general one, the odds of accomplishing it are that much greater. I want to earn a ton of money and retire rich is a general goal; while I intend to generate $150,000 annual income and save 15% of it this year, is a specific goal. Part of being able to accomplish the goal is by making it measurable, a ton of money means different things to different people, but I will save 15% of my income is specific and measurable. Building on that same example, saving 15% of that $150,000 per year is attainable, and at the end of that year, there will be $22,500 in the bank. But, is it realistic? Well, yes, depending on the person’s living expenses it is realistic, but that is a personal choice that only the person attempting it can decide. This goal is also time-constrained, as it has been determined that it will be one year to accomplish. Short term, smaller goals could easily be set within these parameters to allow for a feeling of progress.

The following are the two smart goals that I have set for Deep Roots Distillery:
SMART Goal 1:
Deep Roots Distillery will create two new flavors to introduce to the market in the next 3 months. To accomplish this goal, Deep Roots will create 6 new flavors to experiment with and of those 6 flavors, 2 will be added to the product line. There will be internal taste tests, among Deep Roots and Beamish Orchards employees, family and friends, and there will be external taste tests, among Orchard and Distillery patrons, chefs and others. The top two flavors will be added to the product line. Deep Roots will gain a more competitive edge with an expanded product line, and the timing will allow those new flavors to launch at the beginning of the tourist season.

Specific: Deep Roots Distillery will create two new flavors to add to their product line.
Measurable: Deep Roots will create six experimental flavors and select two to bring to market within 2 months.
Attainable: Deep Roots will perform internal and external taste tests to ensure that the chosen products are sellable and not market failures.
Realistic: Two potable flavors in three months is an attainable goal.
Timely:
