The Accident That Could Easily Be Solved.
The theme to “The Man Who Was Almost A Man” can be interpreted in many different ways. Many may think that the theme is about how parents need to take more responsibility for what their kids do. Or some may say that parents need to be stricter with what their kids buy. I look at the theme of this story in a different way.

What on earth was a parent thinking letting there 17 year old kid buy a gun? You never know what a teenager really wants a gun for. Dave could have been planning a murder or he could have been planning on hurting himself. Many kids in the world have very scary intentions now days. I know, back in the day the world wasnt as scary and evil as it is today. But back in the day the police werent as strict either, so you could carry a gun and nothing would have really been done about it. When Dave gets home he hides the gun and tells his mother he hid it outside. If his mother was a responsible lady, she would have gone with Dave to get the gun right then. Then the accident happens where Dave went to work and decided to try out this weapon he had bought. He never once was taught how to hold a gun, let alone shoot a gun. Before he goes to shoot the gun he tells Jenny to move out of the way and not go running away. So when he goes to shoot it, he didnt have a tight grip and pulls the trigger. But when he pulled the trigger the gun kicked and the bullet hit Jenny. This accident caused the death of a human being. A human being is very fragile, not only to themselves, but to those who know them. When somebody dies it impacts many friends and families lives.

Another point that comes to mind is how when Jenny died, her father Jim Hawkins, told Dave that all he had to do was pay $50. If there was a parent that allowed there kid to buy a gun, and that gun ended up killing my daughter, family member or even a friend, there would be some very serious issues. I would never just say that you have to pay me off for the death of my daughter. A life is worth way more than money. I would hold
