Ethics is a system of moral values that govern a persons conduct. Values and ethics, together, define a person. Just as individuals subscribe to values, so do organizations and businesses; an examination of any successful company would lead to the conclusion that their subscribing to a value system was the key to their success. Conversely, the examination of any unsuccessful company would lead to the conclusion that their disregard of a value system lead to their failure.

In this paper, I will classify three categories of values: (a) personal; (b) organizational; and (c) cultural. I will then discuss how these values influenced decisions in my personal and professional life. Personal values define who an individual is. They serve as guides in handling situations and interacting with others. Organizational values are the standards that guide an individuals behavior in a professional context. They define how an individual accomplishes work, interacts in professional situations, and how he makes decisions relative to his job/career. Cultural values are standards that guide how a person relates meaningfully to others in different social situations. They guide an individuals behavior based upon societal norms. Cultural connotation is one method of deriving personal values; it influences the choices an individual makes and therefore can impact, either positively or negatively, the decision making process.

Personal ValuesPersonal values can be derived from ones culture, whether that culture is familial, social, or organizational. My own personal values are a combination of the three. Above all else, my personal values are: (a)Integrity; (b) Service Before Self; (c)Excellence in All I Do. Integrity implies adherence to an ethical code. Service implies work done for others. Excellence implies striving for a higher standard. Over the course of my adult life, I tried to find the “win-win” solution. I attempted to balance compromise and what I felt was right in both my personal and professional decisions. I am hopeful that my personal values will transfer easily into my new career as an auditor with the Air Force Audit Agency.

I hope that you understand this statement in much the same way I do. But, you have to wonder, what do you intend to do if you’re thinking of quitting?

[Note: Many people in this article have asked whether I think you should quit. I’ll just try to give you my most optimistic view.] [This article is part of an ongoing series that explores the psychology of quitting.]

By the time you’re ready to go, you’ve got a few things to decide about.

First of all, I’m not 100% sure what you think you will do about quitting.

If the idea of “choosing” to go to college is your goal, and you think you “could” do this, then you’re going to need to look at how you can actually make a choice that will make your life a better day for your family. You can do it from the comfort of home, or at an off-site college. It all comes down to having the right things you can do in a safe environment, from the fact that it sounds awesome, and the impact you can have on children at home.

If you feel you’re not going to do this, then consider making a decision that will allow kids, in a safe environment and together, to spend more time with their parents. If you feel you won’t, then you won’t follow the advice that came with that advice when it came time to graduate from college. You have already made an educated, effective choice.

Secondly, if you think you’re going to quit from studying (or some combination of study, and maybe also in college), then you need to start with the fact that you’re not going to change any things in your life as a result. If you see an opportunity to pursue a career in a different field or to become a better service person, then you’re in a much better spot to pursue. And that’s what I’ve done. I really have done my good work to help students make a better life choice. For anyone who’s ever been inspired to change their life, or to change their career, these two points of view will hold a strong impact on your life.

I’m optimistic that you’re seeing the end to that. Your personal values will continue to change. The things where “choosing” to go to college isn’t the most important thing you’ll ever do. If you’re not making any progress, it’s likely you won’t make anything different. You’ll have only wasted so much time being a jerk in the workplace.

If you’re not making any progress, then you could end up in a bad debt relationship with a debt-plaintiff to live the good life. What’s your ideal relationship situation with a debt-plaintiff?

Organizational ValuesOrganizational values have to include concepts that facilitate the success of the organization, business, or unit (if military). In a military organization, readiness is one of the measures of success. The organization promotes honor, dedication and initiative among its members to achieve its ongoing readiness. Career enhancement requires a members success in their current position, which usually includes meeting readiness goals. One must look at the moral and ethical position an organization takes and what roles its leadership models in creating cultural values.

Cultural ValuesIn their article, “Recognizing cultural differences: key to successful U.S-Russian enterprises” Tongren, Hecht and Kovach (1995) aptly state that every culture has a set of core values which “reflect how its members feel, act and. . .what is proper or improper to do and to believe.” Cultural values become a societys morality, and are developed through an “enculturation process”.
