But I believe that colonization and globalization have exerted the strongest influence on many cultural aspects and it is for sure that our world would not be the same if it was not for the colonization. In this essay I am going to discuss how such cultural aspects as religion, music and governmental system has been influenced by colonization and globalization.
The most popular religion in Europe and one of the four greatest religions, Christianity, has been widely spread over the world thanks to colonization. When Britain, France and Belgium colonized Africa the missionaries were sent to spread Christianity all over the continent. They brought and established there Christian branches such as Protestantism, Anglicanism and Catholicism . Christianity remains strong in Africa today; almost half of the continent is Christian, something that would never ensue if colonization had not occurred. Furthermore, Christianity was also brought to Brazil, when Portuguese occupied this country in 1489 . Other parts like South and Central America, were occupied by Spain and also became Christian to a wide extent. Generally speaking you can find Christianity all over the world, somewhere in bigger and somewhere in smaller extension. I assume that if colonization by Europeans would have not occurred, most of indigenous tribal religions would be more widespread and religious diversity would be smaller in these countries. In some cases however globalization evens out cultural differences and makes everything alike; for example it is easier to communicate and understand each other in equal society (i.e. similar food, religion). I therefore think that religion hampers development of globalization. It is very unlikely that every person in the world will choose the same and mutual religion or repudiate religion at all. However globalization can create more “preferable” groups or popular trends which everyone will strive to. For instance Buddhism becomes more and more popular in Europe.
Music is one of the cultural aspects that have without doubt been influenced not just by colonization but also by globalization. Let us do not forget that colonization means that one country or nation is taking over another, so people who are defeated do not have any choice and have to submit their ruler, therewith it is not always that colonized countries will get any profit from its colonizer. Globalization however means that countries stand on equal grounds and do not violate each other; they make agreements to help and learn from one another, make their economy more similar. For example during the Portuguese colonial era in Sri Lanka, Sinhala music has been influenced by new techniques and new instruments such as guitars and ukuleles. Later on came also Bollywood influence, triggered by globalization, since Bollywood became quite popular
The cultural impact of colonialism on India is far more than the number of words we are using. In general, if we say colonialism is the culture and people who are subjugated, if we say that colonialism is the culture and people who live in India and have no real right to be free, so how did the colonial period influence India? How do we understand some of the examples we have collected to explain colonialism? Also some of the examples we have collected to explain social justice.
In the beginning we will be talking about India and democracy, one of the great achievements of India’s development, and how democracy has had a huge effect on social and economic development. We have been giving a lot of thought to what these countries’ democracy is and how it could help them to realize their goals. In particular, in social justice, we will be talking about social justice for women and sexual minorities. There is a lot I would like to hear. We can use the same social justice talk that we are doing already on how it is necessary to protect women, protect children, protect the environment:
Women, women, rights and social justice are really important points to be aware of. Even more important is the need to protect the environment from pollution, which is also something indigenous and other people were suffering during colonialism. And now we can say that this is because of economic development when we are talking about sustainable development or the environment. These are not simply technicalities; these are fundamental values that were brought to Indian development in colonial times. So for example as regards people who are facing poverty and diseases that had nothing whatsoever to do with colonialism, these are the kinds of things we should look for.
The last point is that we are talking about human rights as well as social justice, because the idea of human rights is not restricted to different countries. We want all of them to have rights, so those people who are being denied human rights are definitely the ones with the right to say “We will stop the injustice we are facing.” And these people are just as deserving of rights as all the world’s peoples. And also from the cultural point of view, the term “culture” is used just a little bit too often, but the fact of the matter is that we believe that the more we can communicate about human rights and cultural development, the more Indians will become well-educated. In fact these people are the true potential generation who will develop with such basic knowledge.
When it comes to talking about cultural change, India has an amazing opportunity. Every continent can become a cultural leader right now, right under the eyes of people who are not even aware of global culture, but are not even aware what we call the Indian people. Now, there are a few things that help to understand cultural change over these two countries. First, by using the cultural term, India shows us that it has the right culture, it is able to adapt to it in ways that are more sustainable (in the case of the Indian people; for example, it uses these cultural terms such as “Indians”) and it is able to build the future into the future. Secondly, this idea to call the cultural leader, because of how it can bring together different cultures that is not only positive but positive. It allows us to get real information on some aspect of the future that all of us can expect and can expect.
