In an extremely cutthroat playing field, only a small number of attorneys offices or firms including the government offices offer a hand up for young minority attorneys. Whenever you start a new job anywhere, the employees already in the office is crucial for help with sharing their experience and showing you best practices.
Additionally, this industry is dominated by white associates and their social networks. I am writing about my experience because I desperately want to fit in but the very people I work with I do not dine with or socialize with. There is no diversity in the legal field. I have come into this field with fewer contacts which could help me succeed. I believe there is a major disparity when the very people we represent is 85% of the minority. My experience has been to be classed with downgrade work, drug cases and domestic abuse.
The stereotype stills plays a major role because it is not based on skill or intelligence. So like Hughes I have to do whatever it takes at that moment to fit in the office climate. I just want to be a part of the team and be respected for my intelligence and not the color of my skin. There is no cookie cutter solution to this problem, however I believe the issue should be seriously investigated. The morally and correct thing to do is to recruit, hire and promote minority attorneys in todays melting pot of society.
