The concept of art and art alone are all based on aesthetical thought. Each piece of art has a meaning, or concept to which it was made. A piece of art can make you feel a certain emotion or mood which is known as expressionism. These expressionistic paintings are exaggerated and have a unique and vibrant usage of color. Art can be used as tool or a symbol getting people to think or behave a certain way, such as political cartoons, this is known as instrumentalist art. Paintings based on the principals of art and design, such as line structure, shape and simplicity are known as formalistic art. The best example of formalist art is the work of Piet Mondrian, he used simple colors for the basic shapes of rectangles and squares and added black lines to divide each shape. (1) Imitationist paintings are paintings that “imitate” the real life object, or person. The imitationist paintings look as if they are jumping of the canvas, for instance Rafael Peales Cheese and Three Crackers look as if the snack was ready to be eaten. Art can relate to a certain language or culture using words, or symbols. A person would have to understand the meaning of the presented symbols, or words to know the meaning of the piece of art. Institutionalist art is artwork that is considered artwork because the artist who created it intended it to be a piece of art.
