Physology and Me
There were quite a few chapters that I found to be very interesting. Learning the history of psychology and how it has emerged to how our senses work. One of my favorite things was taking the personality quiz. At that exact time when we did that I needed a reminder of who I really am. It’s funny how sometimes you can lose sight of something like that. But I would have to say the chapters on disorders was what really hit home with me.

Growing up I never witnessed anyone close to me suffering from depression, anxiety, or addictions. However, my husband’s up bringing was much different than mine. Many people in his family have battled the above. Some maybe just depression, while others experienced all three. The most common being addiction. Addiction is described as “either a physical or a psychological dependence or both, on a drug.” Mainly this pertaining to alcohol, but a few have been addicted to meth or prescription pills.

With the addiction to alcohol some members of the family quit many years ago through AA meetings and the 12 step program. The successful recovering alcoholics still attend meetings on a regular basis, or throughout the year when hard times approach them. There are a few family members that have become addicted to prescription pills and worse, meth. These addictions started when they were diagnosed with anxiety and depression and were prescribed medication. Anxiety is “explained as psychological disorders involving fears that are uncontrollable, disproportionate to the actual danger the person might be in, and disruptive of ordinary life.” Mainly the anxiety they experience is in social settings and is controlled by medication. Unfortunately some are now addicted to this medication because of misusing it along with other drugs or alcohol. This led to the addiction to meth for a few people. Sadly one has passed away. The other is currently in a treatment center for six months.
