One of the first major decisions that a student preparing for college must address is if a dormitory is the best for them or if it would be better for them to live at home. Dorm life has much less structure than living at home so students must learn to develop their own guidelines that will allow them to be successful. Living at home can stunt the growth process, which is a normal part of maturing into an adult. Parents and their son or daughter need to work together to make sure that the choice they decide on is right. Both choices have their pros and cons, so its crucial to weigh your choices before you make a final decision. The most important issues students might look for are their independence/social life, transportation and cost.

If you chose to live at home during college, it would be a huge money saver. Room And Board College costs thousands of dollars per year and staying home represents in savings. It is a good idea to keep your expenses as low a possible during college because you will have to pay back any college debts after graduation. While staying at home you wont have to worry about going out and buying food. There is always plenty of food at home. Theres nothing like home-cooked meal to come home to every night. Home-cooked meals are non-existent on campus, unless one your professors are generous enough to invite you over for dinner.

Parents and family members are generally supportive of your academic efforts. They will always provide emotional support to help encourage you. Theyll help you strive to do better. Living off campus allows you to get away from your classmates and school buildings when things get stressful. If you live on campus, your life will necessarily revolve around the college. Comfort is also a benefit many students enjoy when commuting to school. Commuter students can study in the quiet of their own room and not be subjected to the sounds and events going on around the dorm. You also dont have to share a space with a roommate and wont have to worry about them using or taking your stuff. Students can come and go as they please. Living at home allows you to have more of a life away from college.

Living at home as its pros but then there are some cons about commuting to school.
If you live off campus, you will have to commute every day to get to your classes. Staying in a dorm allows you to simply walk to your classes straight from your bedroom. You can literally wake up 5 minutes before class starts and still make it on time. The lack of involvement in college, living as a commuter makes it harder to participate in college events. Without a dorm room, you would have to take a personal initiative to meet with classmates outside of class.

If you live with your parents, you then lack the independence you gain with dorming. You still have to a bid by your parents rules
