Although Buddhism is a prominent religion in China today, starting in the 1st century C.E, its spread to China from India had various reactions. The Chinese response to Buddhism differed depending on time period, educational background, and social status.

Documents 2 and 3 are both knowledgeable supporters of Buddhism. In Document 2 Zhi Dun writes about the rewards of Buddhism. Being a Chinese scholar circa 350 C.E one would think he would be an avid supporter of Confucianism, but he is very passionate about Buddhism. In Document 3 the author is an anonymous Chinese scholar circa 500 C.E. Since he is a scholar he wouldve been a smart man, like Zhi Dun in document 2. I believe the scholar may have been answering questions that arose from Confucian scholars. His answers seem to be from a Buddhist point of view, it expresses the worldly desires that the four noble truths want Buddhist adherents to escape.
