In chapter six Elizabeth and Charlotte discuss Janes feelings for Mr. Bingley. Charlotte mentions that if Jane does not fully show her feelings to Mr. Bingley he may lose interest in her. They then further discuss what they believe to be a good foundation for marriage. This conversation foreshadows all that is to come further on in the novel.
In chapter six as the two girls speak charlotte mentions “but it is sometimes a disadvantage to be so very guarded. If a women conceals her affection with the same skill from the object of it, she may lose the opportunity of fixing him.. In nine cases out of ten, a woman had better show more affection than she feels”(pg23). What Charlotte is mentioning here is the same thing that Darcy notices. This conversation foreshadows when Darcy separates Bingley from Jane. He doesnt do it intentionally, he believes that Jane doesnt like bingley. That is exactly what Charlotte is telling Elizabeth.
Charlotte and Elizabeth further discuss what they believe are the right standards to marry a man. Elizabeth believes it is better to be patient and sure of your feelings before you get married. Elizabeth defends Jane when she says ” she has known him only a fortnight. She danced four dances with him at Meryton, she saw him one morning at his own house, and has since dined in company with him four times, this in not quite enough to make her understand his character”. I agree with her. I would never marry someone without knowing them really well and making sure this is the person I want spent my entire life with. I would never marry a man for money because money not buy happiness.
Charlotte on the other hand disagrees with Elizabeth. She believes it is not good to know to much about your future husband. Charlotte says “happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance. If the dispositions of the parties are ever so well known to each other, or ever so similar beforehand,
