In Arthur Millers The Crucible the character of John Proctor is a hard working, well respected and honest man. Arthur miller tells us John Procter was “powerful of body, even tempered, and not easily led.”(p.20)
John proctor was viewed as a very hard working man. John Procter owned a very successful farm in town; his success was earned from his hard work. We know this from Arthur Millers description of john Procter, also from the others characters in the story.
Throughout the story john and his wife Elizabeth are accused of witch craft. John is questioned by hale and hale comes to the conclusion john doesnt do witchcraft. To prove that statement hale says “then you do not believe.” He is suggesting john doesnt even believe in witches.
John Procter didnt get along with some people in town. Reverend Parris didnt not like john because of his respect and wealth for being a farmer was too much; compared to him who was a priest who graduated from Harvard. John proctor didnt like Parris because his style of preaching. John though he spoke of the devil to often and didnt like it. “I have trouble enough without I come five mile to hear him preach only of hell fire and bodily domination.”(p. 28)
Over all John is a well liked character and shows bold courage thus far in The Crucible. Im interested in his character and personality it keeps me into the book. Im anticipating to see what happens next in the play.
