One of the main characters in this story is Tom Buchanan. Buchanan is a very big man and he is married to a girl named Daisy Buchanan. He is also a very wealthy man, which allows him to indulge in many luxuries. As the story progresses Tom is portrayed in a more negative light. He was cheating on his wife Daisy with a girl named Myrtle and didnt try to keep it a secret. “Were getting off! He insisted. I want you to meet my girl” (28). Not only was he cheating on both girls, but he was also kind of abusive. For example his mistress, Myrtle, kept on saying Daisys name and Tom didnt like this. Eventually he had enough and he broke her nose. He also accidently hurt Daisy earlier in the story. Later in the story everything almost comes back at Tom. Myrtle gets run over and dies from her wounds and Daisy considers leaving Tom for Gatsby. Tome realizes this and does everything he can not to lose Daisy, which included doing a very in depth background search on Gatsby. This leads us to our next character, which is the great Gatsby or James Gatsby. Gatsby was kind of a weird character. He seemed very cool and chill in the beginning of the story, but you could tell there was something different about him. For one there was a lot of uncertainty around him. He said that he born in the Midwest in a town called San Francisco. One problem is that San Francisco isnt in the Midwest. Another thing that was kind of weird about Gatsby is how he obtained all of hes money. He takes Nick to meet one of his business partners name Mr. Wolfshiem. The only problem is that Wolfshiem is known for fixing the world series and you wonder if Gatsby obtained his money in an illegal way. ” I understand youre looking for a business gonegation” (75). The previous passage refers to Wolfshiem thinking that Nick was someone else. Immediately Gatsby walks in and says that this isnt the guy. You kind of wonder what business Wolfshiem is referring too and it makes Gatsby seem a lot sketchier. As the story progresses its reveled that Gatsby is doing all of this because he wants to get Daisy back. While Gatsby is pursuing Daisy, his character changes a lot. He is a lot less calm and makes a lot more mistakes. In fact one of his mistakes probably got him killed. Overall both James Gatsby and Tom Buchanan want to gain or keep the same girl, but are portrayed in much different lights.
