Economic transfers or wealth are in some cultures expected to be received by the brides family as a monetary or other type of wealth transfer called bride wealth, brides service, and dowry. In many ways and cultures these practices could be considered buying a bride for your self, or a husband for your daughter but you will learn how even though we may jump in to conclusions there are some cultures that have know no other way and to whom it seems normal to maintain this customs.

Bride’s wealth is the exchange of wealth takes place when a man wants to marry a woman. This exchange comes from the groom to the family of the bride in compensation for taking away a member of their family whom would have contributed income or work power to the families. The groom is expected to make up for the families income or work loss monetarily or some other kind of wealth such as cattle gold or other items that may be of value to the brides family. An other example in an urban society a daughter could be expected to contribute to the families finances therefore when the daughter gets married they would miss a household income.

Brides service is the exchange for the labor the daughter would have done, the groom will work for the family for a period of time this allows the family to slowly transition and adapt to their smaller family. This would allow a family to maintain a life stile such as they were used to before losing
